Digital Markets Act: European Parliament to push interoperability

Strasbourg, 23/11/2021 – Today, the European Parliament’s Internal Market Committee (IMCO) adopted its position on the proposed Digital Markets Act (DMA).[1] Pirate Party MEP Marcel Kolaja, IMCO shadow rapporteur of the file for Greens/EFA, has ensured that interoperability is embedded in the text. The DMA aims to guarantee fair competition in the online economy by preventing Big Tech gatekeepers from abusing their power. Together with the Digital Services Act (DSA), the Digital Markets Act is one of the core elements of the EU’s Digital Strategy.

Marcel Kolaja MEP, Czech Pirate and Vice-President of the European Parliament, comments:

“I’m glad that the Parliament sees the future in interoperability of services. According to the Parliament’s position, gatekeepers are obliged to allow interoperability with their services such as chat platforms and social networks under the same conditions that are available for them. This would allow for users of different messenger services and social networks to be able to exchange information with each other independently of the platform without having to use several apps. Given that the lack of users on an emerging platform is a key contributor to detrimental lock-in effects, interoperability is crucial in order to restore competitive environment on these digital markets. In addition, the adopted text forbids targeted advertising based on ethnicity, religion, political views, or sexual orientation. This is a step into the right direction.”

The text adopted in the committee shall be presented to the plenary in a forthcoming session and then constitute the Parliament’s mandate for the trilogue negotiations with the Council, which are due to start under the French Presidency in the first half of 2022.
