Sviatlana Volchak, a lecturer at the Belarusian State University, who took part in the creation of the University strike committee, and her husband Mikhail are serving 15-day arrests in a prison of the Police Department in Ivanava, Brest Region. She was sentenced for administrative detention for asking people to participate in an unauthorized mass event and for participating in it herself.
Her husband Mikhail was sentenced for the same reason. The government confiscated their equipment, in fact their working tools. The confiscation was motivated by the fact that they had been visiting a Telegram channel which contained messages calling for a rally.
Mikhail and Sviatlana are also part of the Pirate movement. However, even if they were not, such behaviour from Belarusian authorities is unacceptable. Europe demands strong rule of law, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly. Belarus doesn’t follow any of these rules.
The Pirates demand freedom in Belarus, right now. The government must stop its persecution of innocent citizens and return the devices it has confiscated.
