Strasbourg, 17 July 2024 – The European Union should continue to support Ukraine attacked by Russia, adopted the European Parliament today. The very first resolution of the new European Parliament also welcomed by the Pirate MEP Markéta Gregorová, who said Europe’s position towards Ukraine is now clear.
The draft resolution on the need for continued EU support for Ukraine was jointly tabled by the People’s Party, Socialists, Conservatives, Liberals and Greens. According to Pirate MEP Markéta Gregorová, the new European Parliament has sent a clear signal. “Support for Ukraine is still a strong topic. From the beginning of our mandate we have made it clear where we stand in relation to Ukraine and how important it is for us to help the invaded country,” Gregorova said.
By adopting the resolution, MEPs condemned the unjustified and unprovoked war of aggression that Russia has been waging against Ukraine in full scale since February 2022. “We also reaffirmed our continued support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognised borders, as well as Ukraine’s legitimate right to self-defense as a victim of aggression in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter. I am pleased that we also strongly and clearly condemned the recent events in Kiev, when Russia attacked the Ochmatdyt children’s hospital, which I visited,” Gregorova added.
MEPs also criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s recent visit to Russia and then to China. “The words and actions of Viktor Orbán are certainly not the will of the entire European Parliament, let alone the entire European Union. Orbán tries to pose as a peacemaker, but in reality he is doing more harm. Immediately after his visit to Russia, even harsher attacks began, including those on sick children. This is disgusting and needs to be condemned,” says the MEP.
Last but not least, the new MEPs called on EU member states to increase their military support to Ukraine for as long as necessary and in whatever form it takes; the European Commission to propose long-term financial aid for Ukraine’s reconstruction; and the EU Council to extend anti-Russian sanctions and sanctions against other regimes that support Russia’s war of aggression.
