Gender identity as a reason for discrimination? An open letter to Czech municipalities Mikulov and Dolní Benešov

MARCEL KOLAJA:

Prague, September 1st, 2020 – Nowadays, municipalities across Poland are proclaiming themselves as so-called “zones without LGBT”. The European Commission put funding of such municipalities on hold. Conversely, the Polish government is financially compensating them. Among those are Tuchów and Wilamowice, two municipalities that signed a cooperation agreement with their Czech counterparts – Mikulov and Dolní Benešov. Members of the Czech Pirate Party call for the end of the partnership with these Polish municipalities in an open letter. Namely, Vice-President of the European Parliament Marcel Kolaja, Member of the Czech Parliament František Kopřiva, as well as Zuzana Klusová and Lukáš Dubec, who lead the Czech Pirate Party in regional elections.

“We have to stand up for the rights of the people who are now unwelcome in their own homes due to their gender identity,” Kolaja said. “The European Commission has already pointed out the absurdity of these so-called ‘zones’. We must make every effort to avoid such discrimination. ”

“Supporting the rights of the LGBT community is among our main political priorities. We have been participating in the Prague Pride parade for years. Furthermore, we put forward legislation that makes gay marriage possible. That should grant equal rights to everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation. However, we must also pay attention to threats abroad,” commented Kopřiva.

“Dolní Benešov and Mikulov are not responsible for what is happening in Poland,” Klusová added. “However, it is necessary to draw attention to the fact that they can contribute to a better life for gays and lesbians. They can express their opinion by the termination of their cooperation agreements with the two Polish municipalities. That is exactly what we call for in the open letter,” she concludes.
