Open Letter to Donald Trump: Pardoning Snowden means freedom for all of us

MARCEL KOLAJA:

Brussels, August 23, 2020 – The President of the United States recently suggested a possibility of a presidential pardon for Edward Snowden. Members of the European Parliament from four political groups – led by Vice-President Marcel Kolaja – expressed their support for this intention in an open letter addressed to the President.

“Pardoning Snowden will be a historic step forward promoting transparency and freedom. That’s the main reason why my colleagues and I sent an open letter to Donald Trump, in which we ask for a presidential pardon for Snowden,” said Marcel Kolaja. “People have the right to get access to information. If any government wiretaps citizens on a mass scale, it is legitimate to blow the whistle. Therefore, Snowden deserves freedom,” added Kolaja.

“The European Parliament asked to stop the prosecution of Snowden already in 2015. Furthermore, one million people signed a petition demanding a pardon for him. I am glad that Donald Trump is considering it,” concludes Kolaja.
